The Detroit Pistons…Always A Force In The NBA
Fifty years ago, the Detroit Pistons were born out of what had been the Fort Wayne Pistons. Founded in 1941, the original team played in Fort Wayne, Indiana as a part of the National Basketball League. 1948 moved them to the Basketball Association of America, and in 1949, then owner, Fred Zollner, helped to merge the two leagues forming what is now the present day National Basketball Association.
Although they were popular and loved in their hometown of Fort Wayne, the Pistons could not make the money they desired because of a tiny venue. They moved to Detroit in 1957, bringing basketball back to the area after a ten year absence.
In their fifty years in Detroit, the Pistons have managed to take home three NBA championships, five conference titles, and nine division titles. They are one of the most successful and well known teams in the league.
Of course, their success has created some rivals and some very entertaining drama. In the 1970’s, the Pistons and the Bulls became fierce rivals on the court. The Pistons failure to defeat the Jordan-led Bulls lead to a rivalry between Jordan and the “Bad Boy Pistons” and also prompted a campaign called the “Jordan Rules” by the team, which according to certain members at the time was nothing more than a psychological play to psych out the other team.
Other rivalries include the Pistons and Celtics rivalry which was hottest during the late 1980’s, when the two teams faced off in the playoffs five out of seven seasons; and the more recent Pistons and Magic rivalry which evolved in 2007.
In their long history, the Detroit Pistons have called many places home. Currently they are located in the Palace of Auburn Hills, commonly known as just “The Palace.” The Palace has the largest seating capacity in the league, with seats for more than 22,000 fans.
Originally built with 180 luxury seats, five more have been added underground and eight more are located just below court level. Although it is the oldest venue in the NBA, the arena has all of the amenities that newer courts boast, and is widely considered part of the reason for the “building boom” of basketball arenas during the 1990’s.
Hooper is the official mascot of the Detroit Pistons. A horse wearing a team jersey, he frolics with the fans, and is responsible for forming the Detroit Pistons Flight Crew. The Flight Crew does acrobatics, dances, and performs during halftime at all home games. They also travel with Hooper when he makes his appearances at local schools and events.
Of the many professional sports teams, few are as well known and loved as the Detroit Pistons. Both on and off the court the Pistons are entertaining and fun.
